Triad Business Bank is proud to introduce a dynamic team of young banking professionals, each with their own inspiring journey and unique perspectives. This Q&A series will highlight the stories of these young bankers as they share their industry experiences, professional insights, and future aspirations. This installment in our Young Bankers series features Matt Zacharias, who provides background on his career as a talented young professional and his perspective on the past, present, and future of the banking industry.

Q: Where are you from originally?
Matt: Green Bay, Wisconsin. My wife and I were always intrigued with North Carolina so we decided to move after a few trips. We were excited for a new area and both found great opportunities in the Triad.

Q: Can you tell us about your journey into the banking industry and what inspired you to pursue a career in finance?
Matt: My parents had both worked in finance and had great things to say about their respective careers. I had always known in my career that I wanted to help others. My career in Banking has allowed me to directly help out local businesses and their employees.

Q: How did you get your start in the industry?
Matt: I was fortunate to go through a credit analyst training program with my prior institution. This allowed me to get a broad understanding of risk management and how a Bank operates.

Q: What do you find most rewarding about working in the banking industry, especially as a young professional?
Matt: I really enjoy the involvement with local businesses, referral partners, and the community. There are endless opportunities in the Triad to help with career development and expanding your professional network.

Q: Can you share any memorable experiences or lessons learned during your time in the banking industry so far?
Matt: Communication is critical. Effective communication internally and with the customer are the largest factors to ensuring a strong relationship with our clients.

Q: Are there any individuals who have been influential during your career?
Matt: The whole Triad Business Bank family has been integral to my development. Both of my managers Amaile Harvell and Leah Price have played extremely vital roles in ensuring that I am on the right path to achieve my goals.

Q: What role do you think community involvement plays in the success of a young banker, and how have you been involved in your local community?
Matt: I think community is an extremely important part to the success of a young banker. Especially being at Triad Business Bank that is our core focus, making the local community a better place by meeting the needs of our local businesses.

Q: What are some challenges or obstacles you feel you have faced as a young person in the banking industry, and how did you overcome those?
Matt: There are times where you have to have difficult discussions with customers. What helps me through these is clearly articulating my message and providing the transparency that the customer deserves.

Q: Where do you see the banking industry headed in the future? What are some trends you’ve noticed?
Matt: I see the Banking industry continuing to embrace technology to make the customer experience more efficient. The industry will have to do this with a measured approach given the added complications such as artificial intelligence.

Q: How can the industry as a whole better recruit and retain young talent?
Matt: Awareness to the variety of different banking careers. There are some great national and regional organizations such as RMA and North Carolina Banker’s Association who have this as a part of their mission. They are finding creative ways to engage the next generation of Bankers.

Q: What is your 5-year plan as a young banker in the Triad? What goals would you like to accomplish?
Matt: I would like to expand my local/professional network as well as regularly continue my education. These goals will help my customers though the additional knowledge I can share, as well as the potential business partners I could introduce to aid their  businesses.
